Reducing Your Carbon Footprint with an App
87% of French people want to better manage the carbon impact of their mobility. That’s where Moovance comes —a mobile app developed by Anas in April 2022. Its aim? To raise individual and collective awareness our mobility habits’ carbon weight using concrete data. By assessing and managing this data, the app helps users gain a clearer understanding of how they can reduce their carbon footprint—in a fun and engaging way.
It’s a great way to support both citizens and companies in the much-needed mobility shift to meet the emission reduction targets of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Hi Janik,
Where did the idea to create Moovance come from?
The idea was to give people a way to act individually on the consequences of climate change—without guilt or judgment. Climate change generates a lot of anxiety, and it can be hard to know how to behave to reverse the trend or understand what impacts it the most. By enabling users to measure their individual carbon footprint and rewarding positive behavior, Moovance brings rationality to what often feels irrational—and it does so with a positive approach. We chose to focus first on mobility, as it accounts for nearly a third of carbon emissions.
How does the app work?
Once downloaded, the Moovance app automatically detects movements and the mode of transport used, then instantly calculates the CO₂ emissions of each trip. Users can also register a vehicle by entering its license plate number, so the app can calculate a personalized carbon footprint. Each kilometer earns Moove points—similar to a virtual currency—which can be used for various benefits: supporting nonprofits, enjoying discounts or gift vouchers from eco-conscious brands we’ve selected, or even getting cashback in euros. In 2024, we distributed €2 million to users. The Moovance community now has over 1 million members. 80% of users reduce their CO₂ emissions by an average of 10% within the first few weeks. We detect over 1 million kilometers of trips per day.
What were the main development stages of the app?
Moovance was originally created by Ana Mbasso, a data expert who wanted to empower people to act for the climate without needing to be activists. Wanting to join this fight, Rodrigue Langronier, a computer engineer, and I, a marketing specialist, teamed up with Ana to launch the app in April 2022. With this expertise, Moovance is a pioneer in France—perhaps even in Europe—in its field.
How can Moovance be used by companies?
We’ve created a dedicated space for companies so they can encourage their employees to get involved. Moovance offers mobility audits within organizations, conducts workshops with leadership and employees to understand company strategies, and explores how they can take climate action by reducing employee travel emissions. We also run internal challenges to motivate teams, for example during climate-focused events. Moovance helps businesses accurately calculate the sustainable mobility allowance for employees—beyond simple estimates. The app not only quantifies, but also tracks changes in commuting behaviors. And using data gathered from employees, we can set up internal carpooling systems.
How do you tailor your offering to companies’ needs?
As more companies join us, we expand our services. For instance, a large retail chain asked us to manage internal mobility among employees to reduce commuting distances. By analyzing data collected from app users, we can generate detailed insights into mobility habits and support decision-making. Employers can then identify which employees live closest to each store and offer them to switch work locations accordingly.
What are Moovance’s long-term goals?
We want to reach as many companies as possible to get them on board with calculating the carbon footprint of employee mobility. In 2025, we plan to highlight brands that share our values—like Greengo, which offers eco-friendly travel options. Our goal is to support and increase visibility for these virtuous players. We’ve also started working with local governments so they can use our anonymized data to inform transportation planning decisions. This is one of our major development areas—alongside international expansion. We’ve already received interest from several countries. We’re looking for “eco-responsible” partners to join us—meaning brands that produce in their country of origin. By the end of the first half of 2025, Moovance will launch in its first international market. Finally, we’re launching our own positive and eco-friendly media channel—Moovance—on social media to connect with people, inspire them, and share good ideas for low-carbon transport. A YouTube channel will showcase “Moovers” portraits. To support our growth, we’re planning a second fundraising round at the end of 2025, having already raised more than €2 million from business angels.
What user feedback brings you the most joy?
When someone tells us: “Now, when I leave the house, I think about how I’m going to travel.” Word-of-mouth referrals are also very rewarding, as are the user suggestions for future developments—our “Moovers” are a great source of inspiration.
What message do you have for Moovance users?
When it comes to ecology, every little action counts and contributes to the success of a greater cause. It’s essential to act—even individually. We also want to show that taking action for the environment can be fun and rewarding.
